One undertrial was shot dead and two others were injured inside Mathura jail today in a firing purported to be a fallout of rivalry between two gangs.

"While undertrial Akshay Solanki has been shot dead, criminal Rajesh Tota and Rajkumar Sharma suffered bullet injuries," DIG Laxmi Gautam confirmed.

According to Tota, he and Sharma were sitting in the jail when the rival group, also undertrials in the jail, suddenly opened fire on them.

Injured undertrial Sharma was rushed to Agra medical College. Tota is being examined by the doctors of district hospital, Mathura, police said.

According to police sources, it is understood that the firing was the result of a gang war between the supporters of Brajesh Mavi and Tota.

Tota has alleged that the jail authorities had been plotting to "eliminate" him.

District Magistrate of Mathura, Rajesh Kumar, DIG Laxmi Gautam and SSP Manjil Saini are present in the jail to monitor the situation. A thorough search is being conducted in the jail under their supervision on how the weapons were sourced inside the jail premises.

Undertrial Rajkumar Sharma had been transferred from Agra Jail to Mathura jail a week before.
