10 killed as truck plunges into dry river bed in Gujarat

In a major road accident, ten persons, including seven women and a child, were today killed and five others got injured when a truck carrying them broke the railings of a bridge and plunged into the dry Shetrunji river near Gavadka village in Amreli district, police said.

"At least ten persons including seven women and a girl were killed when the truck carrying them fell into the dry river-bed of Shetrunji at Gavadka village on Dhari- Amreli road," Amreli Taluka Police Inspector U G Shah said.

The five injured were taken to the nearest private hospital, while two of them, who are said to be critical, were later shifted to Rajkot civil hospital.
 

The incident occurred when the truck-driver lost control over the vehicle which fell into the Shetrunji river after breaking the railings of the bridge, Shah said.

The deceased belonged to an Amreli-based firm 'Nilkanth Caterers'. However their exact identification is not known, the inspector said.

According to a staff-member of the 108 emergency team, 10 persons were killed on the spot.

"The truck was loaded with catering items like gas-cylinders, big utensils and stoves, which fell on the persons sitting in the truck resulting in serious injuries and deaths," a member of the emergency service, Kiran Bhakhre said.

The bodies of deceased have been taken to Amreli civil hospital for postmortem.
