Eight peacocks were found dead and two others critically injured in Nainwa town yesterday, Assistant Conservator of Forest Hemchand Choudhary said here today.

Another peacock was found dead in Hindoli area on the same day, he said.

A person has been taken into custody from Khanpura village for his alleged involvement in killing of the peacocks, Choudhary said, adding that the birds' carcasses have been sent for postmortem to ascertain how they died.

On May 7, eight peacocks were found dead at Lalgang village in Nainwa.

According to environment activists, killing of peacocks in Rajasthan is the result of superstition among tribes like Mongiya, Kangar and Bheel as they believe eating of the bird's meat is energetic and powerful.
