At least 10 police personnel including a Station House Officer were injured and five police vehicles vandalised when locals attacked them in outer Delhi's Narela area last night claiming that a sex racket was being run with police connivance.

The area SHO, Ghulam Shabbir, suffered fracture in his hand. All the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals and there condition is said to be out of danger.

According to police, they got a PCR call around 9:30 PM about a sex racket being run at Sector A10, Narela.

"There were two girls and two boys on the spot with agitated locals claiming that a prostitution racket was being run. We decided to bring them to the police station for questioning. However, locals thought that police were shielding them and resorted to stone pelting. Some of them also attacked policemen with sticks," a police official said.

A PCR van, SHO's jeep and other vehicles were vandalised by the mob. Reinforcements were soon rushed in from neighbouring police stations to control the situation and senior officers also reached the spot.

"The two couples claimed that they were known to each other and had come to meet while the locals were convinced that they were involved in illegal activities and tried to attack them. We tried to save them and bring them to the police station to ascertain the facts but the crowd turned violent," said a senior police official.

Police have registered a case of rioting against unknown persons and further investigation ie on. Locals, however, claimed that a sex racket was being run in the area with police connivance.
