Ten university students were killed and another five injured today in a road accident in Sohag Governorate in Upper Egypt.

The mishap happened on Al-Kawamel road in Sohag when the bus they were travelling in fell into a dried sluiceway as the driver attempted to avoid a collision with a truck coming from opposite direction.

Ten students and the driver of the bus were killed in the mishap, media reported. Five students were injured and were rushed to hospitals.

University students protested against the death of their colleagues, who were returning to their homes from the varsity.

Minister of Higher Education el-Sayed Abdel-Khaleq announced that study in the varsity will remain suspended for four days from tomorrow following the mishap.

Egypt has one of the world's highest accident rates because of careless driving, and poor road and vehicle conditions.

The WHO ranks Egypt the world's tenth worst country in road accidents, after India, China and the US.

A recent report by the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics said there were 15,578 car accidents in Egypt in 2013, up 0.4 per cent from the year before, which claimed the lives of 6,716 people and injured 22,411 others.
