10 years RI for abetting for suicide

A court today sentenced a 27-year-old man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for harassing and instigating a teenaged girl to commit suicide.

The prosecution case was that Saravanan, a married man, had waylaid the 18-year-old college girl and teased her and threatened to murder her if she did not accompany him on June 27 last year.

Following this, the girl set herself ablaze at home.

District Mahila Court Judge Thirunavukkarasu awarded 10 years RI to Saravanan and imposed on him a fine of Rs 50,000 finding him guilty of abetment to commit suicide by the girl.

The judge also ordered that of the fine amount, the parents of the deceased girl should be given Rs 25,000 each as compensation.
 

The judge also awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment to Saravanan for harassing her and three years RI for threatening her. Totally, he awarded 20 years RI but ordered that the sentences run concurrently.
