A 30-year old goldsmith was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by a court here today for causing the death of his wife by subjecting her to cruelty over dowry demands.

The prosecution case was that A Natarajan got 18 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs 10,000 cash as dowry when he got married on May 27, 2007.

As he wanted to open his own outlet, he demanded more dowry from his father-in-law and subjected his wife to cruelty.

His parents and brother too subjected her to torture by claiming they could have got more dowry if they had chosen some other bride, the prosecution alleged.

Unable to withstand it, the woman attempted suicide in 2011. She was admitted to Government Stanley Medical College Hospital here where she died.

On a complaint from her father, the man, his parents and brother were booked for offences under IPC linked to dowry death.

Mahila Court Judge, Meena Sathish, convicted Natarjan and sentenced him to 10 years RI, while acquitting his parents and brother.

The judge also slapped him with a fine of Rs 15,000.
