At least 100 miscreants have been arrested and around 400 charged with making fake phone calls to the local police control room here, police said today.

More people are likely to be arrested as the police is investigating around 2,000 such calls received at the control room via the number 100, Kanpur SSP Yashaswi Yadav said.

Some of them have used abusive language against women operators, while others made blank and misleading calls, he said.

"More call records are being investigated after which complaints will be registered and arrests will be made," the SSP said.

The calls to the helpline number (100) have hindered the work of police in the control room, which was set up to help people contact the police immediately in case of emergencies and crime, he said.

"The accused are charged with hindering the functioning of police, and of using foul and abusive language with female and male workers," Yadav said.

The SSP said the arrests will show the importance and seriousness of the police control room and make people realise that it is not for playing games.
