Over 100 kg of poppy straw, hidden in cartons meant for transporting apples, was seized from two trucks on the Mughal Road in Poonch district, a defence spokesperson said today.

Based on a specific intelligence, Rashtriya Rifles personnel along with the police, intercepted two trucks, bound for Amritsar in Punjab, from Shopian, 28 km from Poonch town, and seized 105 kg of poppy straw from apple cartons, he said.

"This is a major haul. Narcotics and drugs smuggling has emerged as a security threat because of its diabolic alliance with terrorist groups," the spokesperson said.

This seizure would be a big blow to "narco terrorism activities", he said.

The Mughal Road has its own dynamics since it links Kashmir Valley with Rajouri and Poonch districts in Jammu region and has witnessed exponential rise in movement of vehicular traffic over years.

Security personnel deployed there have taken all possible measures to negate any threat which has severe socio-political and security implications, the spokesperson said.
