11 dead in jeep-truck collision near Ujjain

Eleven members of a family were killed today when the jeep they were travelling in collided with a dumper truck on Agar road, 20 km from here, a police official said.

The victims, belonging to Paliwal family of Mahidpur town in the district, were on their way to Ujjain for taking part in Simhastha Kumbh Mela which is to start from April 22, additional superintendent of police Manohar Singh Varma said.

The dumper truck collided head-on with the jeep, killing 11 persons on the spot. Further details about the incident are awaited, he added.

Among the deceased are five women, four men and two
 

children, Additional Superintendent of Police Shailendra Singh said.

Although the deceased are yet to be identified individually, police said that nine of them belong to Paliwal family of Mahidpur. The jeep driver and a woman known to the Paliwal family were also among the dead.

"The driver of the dumper escaped from the spot after the accident," he said.

Enraged over the incident local residents set the dumper on fire on the spot, the ASP said.

The autopsy will be conducted at the district hospital in Ujjain.
