The spectre of crib deaths returned to haunt West Bengal with 11 infants losing their lives at the Malda Medical College and Hospital in the past three days.

"Eight infants died on Monday and Tuesday and three in the past 24 hours. The age of all the dead infants was between one and 30 days," Medical Superintendent and Vice-Principal, MA Rashid, told PTI today.

"All the babies were severely underweight and malnourished and suffered from respiratory problems," he said.

Most of the children were brought from the Kaliachak block and other places in Malda district after being referred by various local hospitals.

The hospital had witnessed many crib deaths last year.
