11 killed, 48 injured as bus falls into gorge in HP

At least eleven people were killed and 48 injured when a tourist bus from Uttar Pradesh plunged into a deep gorge near Biala village, about 50 km from here, this evening.

"The bus with over 60 passengers was heading to Paonta Sahib when it met with the accident in Nahan sub-division," said Manmohan Sharma, Additional District Magistrate, Sirmour.

The tourists had come from Saharanpur in UP to visit Renuka Ji and were on their way back home when the tragedy struck.

At least 11 people were killed and nearly 48 injured in the accident, said the ADM who rushed to the scene with rescue and medical teams.
 

The injured were admitted to hospitals where the condition of some of them was described as critical, he said.

A crane had been pressed into service to pull out the bus from the gorge, he said adding rescue operations were on to locate any possible survivor or body.

The cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained but eye-witnesses said the driver failed to negotiate a sharp bend near Madhara Ghat and the bus rolled down into the gorge.

Chief Minister Vibhadra Singh expressed deep shock and grief over the accident.

He directed the district administration to provide all possible held to the injured.
