At least 11 people were killed and nine others injured when a mini bus collided with a truck in north China's Hebei Province, a media report said today.

The bus carrying 19 people collided with the trailer truck on a national highway in Huangmei township in the city of Zhangjiakou yesterday.

Eight people died at the scene and three others succumbed to their injuries later in the hospital. One of the injured persons remains in serious condition, state-run Xinhua news agency reported, adding that the victims were aged between seven and 70 years.

The drivers of the two vehicles are being treated in a hospital under police custody.

Fatal road accidents is a serious problem in China, where traffic regulations are often flouted.

The country's frequently overcrowded long-distance buses are prone to accidents, with individual incidents regularly causing dozens of deaths.

At least 13 people were killed and six others injured in an accident in southwest China's Guizhou Province in April this year.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), more than 700 people are killed in road accidents across China every day.

Traffic accident claim about 260,000 deaths in the mainland each year and some 1.25 million people die and another 20 million to 50 million are injured every year on the road worldwide, the WHO had said in a report.
