11 killed in UP as heavy rains lash North India

Rain-related incidents today claimed eleven lives in Uttar Pradesh where major rivers continued to flow in spate, while heavy showers lashed most parts of North India.

Heavy morning showers pulled the mercury significantly down in the national capital today but also led to problem of water-logging and subsequent traffic snarls in various parts of the city.

The city witnessed 35.2 mm of rains between 8.30 AM and 5.30 PM, Met department said.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 30.5 degrees Celcius, which was three degrees below normal, while the minimum dropped two degrees below normal to 24.5 deg C.

While three people each died in Faizabad and Lalitpur, two perished in Lakhimpur and one each in Hamirpur, Banda and Hardoi in rain-related incidents like lightning and house collapse taking the toll this monsoon to 215, according to Relief Commissioner's office.

The Ganga river was flowing menacingly, submerging three villages in the Sahaswan tehsil, with the Central Water Commission saying that the river will continue to flow above the danger mark at Fatehgarh, Phaphamau, Varansi, Gazipur and Ballia and other places.

Rivers Yamuna and Ghaghra were also flowing above the red mark at various places, it said.
