The security forces destroyed three tunnels 11 houses and 12 shelters used by the Takfiri militants during a security campaign in Al-Arish, Sheikh Zowayed and Rafah cities of North Sinai, state media reported today.

The military has launched frequent security raids in the area, arrested suspects and demolished houses sheltering terrorists. Tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip were also destroyed during the campaigns.

North Sinai has been at the heart of many violent attacks by Islamist militants since the January 2011 revolution that toppled the regime of former president Hosni Mubarak.

The attacks targeting police and military have increased substantially after the ouster of former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi from power last year.
