Eleven new government colleges will be started in Punjab from this academic year while two professional colleges are being set up at Jalandhar and Patiala to lift the standard of education in the state.
"Punjab government is committed to lifting the standard of higher education and that is why 11 new government colleges are being opened," Higher Education, Water Supply and Sanitation Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra said today.
These colleges would be opened at Pathankot, Ferozepur, Dharamkot, Sujanpur, Kishankot, Dhuri, Bahadarpur, Barnala, Phillaur, Nakodar and Moonak, he told mediapersons after attending annual functions at SCD Government College and Government College for Girls here.

The two professional colleges would be started from the next academic year, Rakhra said, adding construction of buildings for Sports College Jalandhar and Aeronautical College Patiala will be completed soon.
On recruitment of teachers in government colleges, Rakhra said the Punjab and Haryana High Court has stayed the process and new recruitment would be made once the stay has been vacated.
