Eleven students of a government polytechnic college near here were suspended today for allegedly ragging their juniors, college authorities said.

Their suspension follows complaints from junior students and also media reports about alleged ragging incidents at the hostel of Kalamassery Government Polytechnic, they said.

The authorities said that first year students, in their complaint recently, alleged that they were subjected to brutal ragging at the hostel after being asked to strip.

"The institute's anti-ragging cell, which probed the incident today, found that such incidents were reported from the hostel," college principal C K Mohanan said.

The report has been handed over to police, he said.

Meanwhile, the boys' hostel was closed after a protest by students under the banner of SFI, seeking action against the culprits turned violent.
