At least 11 undertrial prisoners escaped from a sub-jail in Zalod town of Dahod district today after attacking the guards, state DGP P C Thakur said.

However, one of the prisoners was later caught by jail authorities as he sustained injuries while escaping.

The incident occurred in evening when the inmates of the facility, controlled by local magistrate, snatched rifles of guards before fleeing, he said.

"All the prisoners who have escaped were undertrials and kept in one barrack. Today evening, one of them asked the on-duty guard to open the barrack claiming that he was suffering from chest pain. As soon as the guard opened the door, about 11 prisoners attacked the guard and thrashed him mercilessly," Thakur said.

They also caught hold of few other guards and snatched two of their rifles, he said.

"We learnt that these prisoners snatched two rifles and escaped from jail. The hunt is on to nab them," the DGP said.

However, it is not yet clear whether the prisoners jumped off the outer wall to make their way out or otherwise.

Meanwhile, Dahod police have barricaded entire area to nab the other prisoners.

"Several police teams are sent to Zalod and surrounding areas," Dahod police control room in-charge Laxmansinh Parmar said.
