Eleven unemployed youths today climbed on the roof of a public water tank here demanding jobs in the Punjab Powercom department on compassionate grounds as their kin had died during service.

The youths claimed that they were running from pillar to post to get the job which was promised by the government on various occasions, and had even met the Chief Minister who had promised to look into the matter, but to no avail.

They claimed that in all state departments, government always accommodated one of the family members on compassionate ground when a person died during service.

Till late evening, the youths refused to come down from the tank, saying they would do so only after getting offer letters.

District administration has called the fire brigade to bring down the protestors.

DCP Punjab Police Kostab Sharma said police could not bring the youths down forcibly keeping in view their safety.

Police offered to pass on a memorandum on their behalf to the state government besides arranging meeting with senior state officers but the youths denied this offer, Sharma said.

Flood lights around the water tank and all kinds of possible safety measures were arranged for the youth, the DCP said.
