An 11-year-old girl has been allegedly raped by her neighbour on the pretext of offering her a lift to her school in west Delhi's Mayapuri area, police said today.

Yesterday, while the girl was on her way to school near Hari Nagar Ghanta Ghar, her neighbour offered her a ride on his motorcycle, a senior police officer said.

Instead of taking her to the school, the accused took her to his friend's shanty in Hari Nagar where he allegedly raped her. He later dropped the girl near her school and threatened the her of dire consequences if she told her family about the incident, the officer said.

"However, her parents got to know that she had not reached the school. When they confronted her about the reason for her absence from school, she shared her ordeal with them," he said.

They lodged a complaint at Mayapuri Police Station and medical examination of the girl confirmed sexual assault, the officer said.

The accused, a 20-year-old youth was arrested and charged with rape and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), he said.

Initially, the accused denied having any knowledge of the incident and tried to mislead police but following sustained interrogation he confessed to raping the girl, the officer said, adding the victim is undergoing counselling.
