12 held for online weapon purchase, flaunting on social media

Twelve people were nabbed today for allegedly possessing deadly weapons which they had purchased through an e-commerce marketplace, police said.

They were picked up after various teams conducted simultaneous raids under the jurisdiction of seven police stations in the city, a senior police official said.

Police seized weapons like swords, daggers, and a long knife etc. from the accused persons, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Task Force) P Radhakishan Rao told reporters.

As per preliminary investigation, the accused had purchased the weapons online, he said.

"The accused also took photographs with the weapons and posted them on the social media for their illegal usage and to create panic among the public," the officer said, adding that 10 swords, two daggers and a long knife were seized.
 

The accused persons were handed over to SHOs of different police stations for taking necessary legal action under Arms Act 1959, the DCP said.

He said cases will also be registered against the e-commerce player on charge of transportation and selling of arms with prohibited length.
