Normal life was partially affected at Jangipur in Murshidabad district today in response to a 12-hr bandh call given by the opposition left and Congress in protest against the alleged police action on protestors during NH 34 blockade earlier.

Official reports said many shops were closed and banks, schools did not function but vehicles plied.

The NH 34 was also open throughout the day and train movement in Sealdah-Lalgola-Malda section was normal.

One person was killed and at least 13 others, including nine policemen, were injured in a clash after a mob blocked National Highway 34 in Murshidabad demanding restoration of electricity line to a village.

After talks failed, police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the mob and then fired in the air at Jhikri under Farakka police station area, as the villagers pelted stones.

A body was found from the spot later on.
