At least 12 people were injured and about a dozen vehicles damaged after local people clashed with police over alleged inadequate arrangements for immersion of idols of Goddess Durga in Ugapur canal in Aurai area here.

The locals who arrived in processions with about 250 idols for immersion at the canal complained of lack of proper arrangements, Aurai circle officer Sukshm Prakash said.

They refused to immerse the idols saying there is no proper lighting, road or enough water for immersion in the canal, he said, adding, the site was decided as the alternative to the Ganga ghat for immersion as per court orders.

In the meantime, efforts were made to take about three dozen idols towards the old immersion site in river Ganga at Chilhghat and when they were disallowed to move, they turned irate and started pelting stones at the police which in turn used force to control them, he said, adding, some people are reportedly injured in the clash.

The mob set a roadways bus ablaze and targeted other vehicles damaging about 11 of them, the CO said, adding that, senior officials and police force was rushed to the area to control the situation.
