12 injured in suspected fire cracker explosion

At least 12 people, including three minor girls and a woman were injured in a suspected bursting of fire crackers in Odisha's Ganjam district on Diwali night, police said today.

The incident took place at Dhanagaharanear village, about 40 km from here.

While two seriously injured persons were shifted to a private hospital in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, two others are beign treated at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here.

Other injured persons, including the girls and the woman, were discharged from the hospital after treatment, the police said.

"While the medical officers treated the injured persons, the critically injured persons were referred to medical college here," said chief district medical officer Mrutunjay Mishra.
 

"We suspect that locally made fire cracker known as 'coconut cracker' might have exploded due to it's mishandling," police said and ruled out any foulplay behind the incident.
