At least 12 policemen were today injured and three vehicles torched by protestors, who resisted efforts to clear encroachment from government land here.

Protestors pelted stones on policemen and officials of the Housing Board, who had gone to clear encroachment from government land near the Passport Office under Digha Police Station area, Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) S K Singhal said.

At least 12 policemen, including officer in-charge of Digha Police Station, received injuries in stone pelting, he said.

Police had to use force and fire teargas shells to control the crowd, who resisted the anti-encroachment efforts from nearly four acre of government land, Singhal said.

Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj said that violent protestors put women and children in front, and resorted to stone pelting under their cover.

Additional police force staged a flag march in the area under District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Aggarwal and Maharaj.

The trouble-makers have been identified from CCTV footage, and they would be arrested soon, Maharaj added.
