A 12-year-old boy from Sangli district successfully underwent an angioplasty surgery in a Mumbai private hospital in a rare case of congenital disease, a doctor at the hospital said today.

"The patient Kaushik Atpadkar was diagnosed with a medical condition called severe Coarctation of aorta and was admitted at Surana Sethia Hospital, Chembur for treatment," Dr Deepak Changlani said.

According to the doctor, incidence of Coarctation of aorta is 2 per 10,000 live births.

In view of suffering from severe hypertension, high blood pressure, the boy needed timely angioplasty of aorta (blood vessel which carries pure blood to the body parts), he said.

However, it was a challenging task due to complete blockage of the blood vessel, the doctor said.

Dr Deepak Changlani and Dr Trupti Changlani, both Pediatric Interventional Cardiologists at the hospital, successfully performed the angioplasty surgery on the boy on January 31, and saved the boy's life.

Kaushik Atpadkar is the youngest child to undergo the said procedure for the rare medical condition in Maharashtra state so far, Changlani claimed.
