A 12-year-old girl from a municipal school in South Delhi was named the brand ambassador for the 'Swachh Bharat, Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan' on the occasion of Children's Day today.

The BJP-led South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) held a grand celebration at the Ambedkar Stadium here to mark first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's birth anniversary.

Rashmi Nayk, a student of Nigam Pratibha Vidyalaya in Defence Colony, was named the ambassador for the drive, which was launched by Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani, SDMC said in a statement.

Irani appealed to the students to join the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' and urged them to make efforts to keep their house, school and surroundings clean.

Under the 'Swachh Bharat, Swachh Vidhyalaya Abhiyan', SDMC will focus on bringing about a quality change at its schools. Special emphasis will be given on overall development of schools, including on the strengthening of infrastructure and improving the quality of education, it said.

Chairman (Education Committee) of SDMC, Ashish Sood, said that this programme has been put together with support from three NGOs -- Ark, CfBT and M-CRIL.

Dressed in colourful traditional Indian attire, 2,500 students of SDMC's primary schools danced, did aerobics and exercises and spread the message of 'One India' as they celebrated the 125th birth anniversary of their beloved 'Chacha Nehru', it said.
