1200 Arakan refugees in Mizoram's Lawngtlai district

Around 1200 people from Arakan in Myanmar have taken refuge in Mizoram's southernmost Lawngtlai district after the Myanmarese Army launched a crackdown on Arakan militants, state government officials said here today.

The refugees from Arakan area of Myanmar fled and entered Lawngtlai district due to clashes between the Arakan rebels and the Myanmarese Army and the last wave of refugees arrived on Saturday last, the official said.

Arakan district in Myanmar is just across the border.

The deputy commissioner of Lawngtlai, Arun T and superintendent of police Lalsanglura today visited the four villages in the district where the Arakan people had taken refuge.
 

The Lawngtlai district administration yesterday sent 40 quintals of rice to the four villages where the displaced people were sheltered.

Medical team were sent by the district administration and also by the Assam Rifles to ensure that there was no outbreak of diseases, the officials added.
