1231 kg smuggled sandalwood seized, 3 arrested

Police have seized 1,231 kg of smuggled sandalwood, worth several crores of rupees, while the precious timber was being transported from Chennai to Gurgaon in a lorry and arrested three persons.

On a tip-off, Rewari district police seized a truck on National Highway 8 at Dharuhera yesterday and nabbed Sonu, Purshottam and Sunil, who were allegedly smuggling 1,231 kg of sandalwood, police said.

A case of cheating, criminal conspiracy and under provisions of the Indian Forest Act of 1927 has been registered against the accused, all residents of Bhiwani district, they said.

The trio was today produced in a court at Faridabad which remanded them in police custody till September 11.
 

The accused have so far revealed that they were ferrying the sandalwood from Chennai to Gurgaon. Their interrogation was still on, a police officer here said.
