125 child labourers rescued, police arrest 32 employers

About 125 child labourers were rescued and 32 owners of hotel and leather manufacturing units arrested for employing underage workers at Agripada area in South Mumbai, police said here today.

Acting on a tip-off from NGO Pratham, which alerted the police about the presence of underage workers in hotels and leather manufacturing units in the Agripada area, the police said.

"Accordingly, raids were conducted today, during which 125 child labourers, aged between 5 and 14 years, were rescued and 32 owners of these establishments were nabbed," Deputy Police Commissioner (Enforcement) Mahesh Patil said, adding a case was registered under relevant sections of the Child Labour Act at Agripada police station.
 

"Majority of the children hailed from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. They were getting anything between Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000 a month," he said.

The rescued children would be taken to rehabilitation centres in the city and their parents would be notified, police said, adding that the accused would be produced before a local court tomorrow.
