Around 125 residents of two villages fell sick today after they drank water, suspected to be contaminated, from as many wells in the district in separate incidents.

The villages are situated 20 kms apart from one another.

"We have so far treated 88 people of Umaria village and 37 people of Machalgaon village who complained of frequent bowel movements and vomiting," District Chief Medical and Health Officer Govind Gupta said.

He said the wells have been sealed following the incident.

"After complaints, the victims were admitted to different health facilities including the district hospital.

However, majority of them have been discharged. No villager is serious. We have sent the water samples of the two wells for test," he said, adding that it seems that water of the wells was not treated.

Gupta said medical teams have been deployed in Umaria and Machalgaon villages.
