In a crackdown on unauthorised construction and encroachments, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has identified at least 127 places of worship which need to be razed.

The Corporation, in a recent a meeting of the committee, classified all the places of worship in the district into two categories. One is "A" which means that the place is unauthorised but needs to be regularised and the other one "B" where the structure is unauthorised and needs to be demolished.

As per the civic body, there are as many as 587 places of worship which shall be regularised.

The list of 127 places of worship which are "unauthorised" was today released. The Municipal Corporation has invited suggestions and objections from citizens on places of worship falling in both the categories.

The list also includes six Buddha Vihars, three churches and seven mosques.

Depending on the need and popularity of the place of worship in the locality, the Corporation will decide each case individually after the receipt of the suggestions and objections.
