13 killed as flood situation turns grim in UP

As many as 13 people were killed in in separate incidents in Uttar Pradesh today as flood waters continued to pose hardships for people in districts, which are located on the banks of Ganga and Yamuna.

Reports reaching here said that six people were killed in Mirzapur, while three in Jaunpur, two in Pratapgarh and one each in Azamgarh and Hamirpur lost their lives in incidents of house collapse and lightning.

A report from Chandauli said that heavy floods have thrown life in disarray specially for those living in low lying areas.

According to official sources, nearly 2.50 lakh people of around 112 villages of the district are affected by floods.
 

In Gazipur, the flood waters have entered into large areas, including the locality having the residence of district magistrate.

Central Water Commission sources said that Ganga was flowing above the danger mark at Phaphamau, Chatnag, Mirzapur, Varanasi beside Gazipur and Ballia where it was respectively flowing 1.79 and 2.42 mts above the danger mark.

Yamuna was also flowing above the red mark at Auraiya, Hamirpur, Chillaghat and Naini and Sharda at Palia kalan.

Met office said chief amount of rainfall recorded in cms are: Kakrahi-18; Dumariyagang, Bansi-12 each; Maharajganj -11; Basti-9; Regoli, Barabanki-8 each; Palia Kalan, Nawabganj, Muhammadi-7 each; Pharenda, Nighasan, Balrampur-6 each and Ayodhya, Khalilabad-5 each.

It forecast heavy rainfall would occur at isolated places over the state in the next 48 hours.
