13 killed as rockslide hits slum in Karachi

At least 13 people, including seven children, were killed today as a massive rockslide hit makeshift homes in a slum in Pakistan's port city of Karachi.

The incident occurred early this morning when a mass of rock and mud crashed down on three shanties erected at the foots of a hill in Gulistan-i-Jauhar area, killing 13 people who were asleep.

"Thirteen people, including seven children and three women were buried alive," commissioner Karachi Shoaib Siddiqui said.

The rescue teams arrived after the incident and pull out the bodies from the debris.

The victims belonged to Bahawalpur and Rahimyar Khan districts of Punjab and authorities were making arrangement to transport bodies to their native areas for burial.
 

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed grief over the incident and instructed authorities to aid the families of the victims.
