1383 people killed while travelling on train rooftops in 2012

More than one thousand people died while travelling on rooftop and footboard of trains in 2012.

According to railways, a total 1383 people died and 2670 injured while travelling on rooftop and footboard of trains during 2012.

The number of people who died while travelling on rooftops and footboards in 2011 was 2159.

Minister of State for Railways K J Surya Prakash Reddy said in the Rajya Sabha that people travel on roof tops/foot boards of local passenger trains during rallies, melas, recruitments and in crowded sections of suburban areas during peak hours.

He said preventive steps are being taken by railways in coordination with local police and GRP to prevent travelling on rooftops and footboards.
