Altogether 14 persons have been arrested across Assam for their alleged involvement in the irregularities of recruitment of 6,748 constables, the Assembly was informed today.

Replying to the issue raised by Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Ranjit Kumar Das, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rockybul Hussain said a total of 14 persons have been arrested and sent to jail for their alleged role in the recruitment process.

Out of these, one Habildar-Clerk in Barpeta and one constable in Hailakandi were arrested, Hussain said on behalf of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi holding the Home portfolio.

The police has also arrested five brokers in Nagaon district, the Minister said.

Two persons each have been nabbed from Dhubri and North Lakhimpur districts, he added.

The police has also taken into custody two women in Golghat for their attempt to influence the recruitment exercise, while one person was arrested in Cachar district, Hussain said.

He informed the House that the government has already cancelled the entire recruitment process in three districts -- Dhubri, Nagaon and Barpeta -- following complaints of alleged tampering with the exercise and announced the results for the remaining 24 districts.

"The Home department of Assam government is committed to prepare clean and transparent list of deserving candidates.

That is why, the recruitment of these three districts have been cancelled and ordered to start the process fresh," Hussain said.

Altogether 3,11,198 applications were received for filling up of 6,748 posts of constables.
