The state government has decided to conduct periodical raids and inspections of all small and big hotels and restaurants to ensure they provided 'safe food' to the customers, he said in the Assembly.
It had also decided to make licences compulsory for those who supply meat, vegetables and fruits to eateries, he said.
Making a statement in the assembly, he said 20 persons fell ill due to food poisoning after consuming 'sheverma', a meat delicacy of West Asian origin, from a fast-food outlet here.
A man from Haripad who consumed the food item before boarding a bus to Bangalore on July 10 died six days later due to food poisoning, Shivakumar said.
The government had ordered a crackdown on unhygienic eateries last week in the wake of the death of the man.
