The death toll in the ferry capsize in the Golachipa river in Bangladesh rose to 14 today with the recovery of six more bodies, police said.

"The divers retrieved six more bodies this morning from inside the (sunken) launch," a police official said in Patuakhali district.

"At least 25 passengers are still missing," local residents said today.

Meanwhile, a rescue vessel left Barisal for Golachipa to salvage the sunken ferry, officials at Patuakhali River Port said.

The ferry capsized in the river in Patuakhali district after the storm called 'Kalboishakhi' (nor'wester) hit Galachipa area yesterday.

The fire service, police and local residents recovered eight bodies during their search campaign with boats on the river yesterday.

Officials could not confirm the exact number of the passengers aboard the ferry plying on a local route, but a survivor who swam ashore safely said the number could range between 70 and 100.

Local residents said nearly a dozen people managed to swim ashore as it sank during the storm that lasted for few minutes only.
