The crime branch of Mumbai police today claimed to have solved 15 cases of robbery and other offences in the city following the arrest of six members of a robbers' gang including a most wanted criminal.

The persons, identified as Suresh Shinde alias Bansi Pawar (50), Ganesh Shinde alias Balbim (55), Rajendra Kale alias Papya, Rajendra Pawar alias Raja (43), Bachindra Shinde (55) and Dattaray Ghagde (36), were arrested earlier this week.

Suresh, who has several cases of robbery, murder and other serious offences registered against him, was one of the most wanted accused in Maharashtra, ACP Praful Bhosale of crime branch said.

According to police, Suresh had been convicted in the past and had recently come out after serving seven years in jail.

"The gang had committed a robbery in Pant Nagar area in eastern suburbs of Mumbai in November this year," said Sanjay Surve, senior inspector of Unit VII of the crime branch.

The stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act has been evoked against the six accused, Bhosale said.

All the accused have been remanded in police custody till December 28.
