15 hectares of opium cultivation destroyed

An approximately 15 hectares of opium plantation at Chatting and Rangkham villages in Longding district bordering Nagaland, were destroyed in a joint operation by IRB and the police.

The operation conducted on Saturday was assisted by the extra assistant commissioner and local youths of Pumao, Longding SP Dhiraj Kumar said today.

"Such operation will be conducted from time to time," he said.

Despite multi-pronged efforts to tackle the menace by both state and central governments, opium is illegally cultivated in vast areas of Longding, Tirap, Changlang, Namsai, Lohit and Anjaw districts of the state.
