Officials of the Narcotics Control Bureau today recovered 15 kg of pseudo ephedrine from a South African national at the airport today.

Based on 'specific information', officials intercepted Johannes Daniel Haskins and seized the drug from his possession, an NCB press release said.

He was travelling from Delhi to Johannesburg via Chennai, it said, adding, the contraband was packed in 15 packets and kept in his suitcase.

The seized contraband was worth around Rs one crore in the illegal local market, the release said.

This was the first time pseudo ephedrine was being seized here while being 'trafficked' to South Africa, it said.

The release further said that pseudo ephedrine is a "controlled substance" and that it's manufacture and usage was restricted to "medicinal purpose only."

"However, it is illegally used to manufacture Methamphetamine, which is a potent party drug," it said.

Further investigation was on to find out linkages between Indian and South African trafficking networks, it said.
