15 shops gutted in blaze in northwest Delhi

Around 15 shops were gutted in a fire in a timber market in northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri area in the wee hours today.

"A call was received at 2.05 AM about a fire that broke out in the timber market near Jahangirpuri Metro Station. Initially five fire tenders were rushed to the spot but after the fire intensified around 2.40 AM, eight more fire tenders were rushed to douse the fire," said an official from Delhi Fire Services.

The fire was spread over an area of 1,000 square yards and furniture was gutted in the fire. Thirteen fire tenders brought the fire under control by 5 AM, added the official.
 

It is difficult to estimate the loss currently, said a senior police officer, adding that no one was injured in the incident.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
