Fifteen undocumented migrants, including seven from India, have been arrested in Mexico, apparently hoping to illegally cross into the United States, authorities said.

Those detained at a hotel in Tapachula in the state of Chiapas also included five individuals from El Salvador and three from Honduras, according to the Interior Ministry yesterday.

The arrests bring to 122 the number of people in the country illegally who were taken into custody in the past month on their way to the US-Mexico border, including dozens of people from India.

Just this past Thursday, Mexican authorities detained 43 undocumented migrants, including 30 from India, who were found hiding in a house in the town of Ecatepec.

Also last week, a group of 20 others from Guatemala, Honduras and India were arrested when the vehicle they were in failed to stop at a customs checkpoint.

More than 140,000 people cross into Mexico illegally annually in the hopes of reaching the United States.
