At least 16 people were killed when a mini-truck met with an accident in Nepal's Nuwakot district, 80 kms west of Kathmandu, on Friday evening.

The victims died after the ill-fated vehicle rolled 500 feet down a hill, said a police officer at the Nuwakot police office.

The identities of the deceased are yet to be established. The vehicle was heading for Sisiphu from Kimtang when it fell off the cliff into a river at Dupcheshwor, the police said.

There were around 40-45 people travelling in the truck when the tragedy struck, said the police officer quoting eyewitnesses.

The accident may have been caused due to overloading, according to preliminary investigation.
