In the backdrop of two murders and recovery of weapons from the district prison here in recent days, sixteen under-trials housed here have been shifted to various other jails in Karnatkaa.

The prisoners, involved in serious cases, were shifted yesterday to jails in Dharwad, Kalaburagi, Ballari, Belagavi and Mysuru, police said today.

Two convicts, including one suspected to be an aide of gangster Chota Shakeel, were killed and six injured in an alleged "gang war" inside the prison on November 2.

A team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjeev M Patil is investigating the criminal case, while the prison department also has undertaken a parallel probe on the possible lapses on the part of the jail authorities.

After preliminary inquiries, police said that the murders of convicts Madoor Isubu and his associate Ganesh Shetty were pre-planned.

Knives, cutting pliers, iron box, electric heaters and mobile phones were recovered from inside the prison during a joint search by the police and jail staff on November 4.
