Rare species of Alexandrine Parakeets and Rose-ringed parakeets, kept for sale in a busy market area here, were today rescued by forest department officials and a person arrested in this connection.
Members of the Environment Conservation Group along with forest department officials noticed the birds kept for sale, at Rs.4,000 for a pair and Rs.2,000 for one, official sources said.
Thirteen Alexandrine Parakeets and three Rose ringed parakeets, kept at the Ukkadam Fish Market, were seized and one person arrested for possessing the birds, which should not be sold or trained in houses under provisions of the Wild Life Protection Act 1972, they said.
