Sixteen students of the Kishanganj campus of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) fell ill purportedly due to food poisoning and were admitted to hospital, University officials said today.

AMU Kishanganj Director Rashid Nehal said the incident happened late last night when students residing at the campus complained about illness, stomach ache and vomitting.

"Our officials called an ambulance and the students were rushed to Sadar hospital for treatment. We are trying to ascertain the reasons behind the illness, and are waiting for the medical report from the hospital," Nehal told PTI.

Although most of the students were discharged today morning, six girls and one boy were under opbservation at the Sadar Hospital here, Dr Anwar Hussain of the hospital said.

The condition of the students is out of danger, he said.

"The students seem to have fallen ill due to food poisoning or consuming contaminated water," Hussain said.
