A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour in her house in Mungeda village, and though beaten up by family members, the accused managed to flee, the police said today.

The incident took place late last night. The accused allegedly entered the girl's room and gagged her to ensure that her family members sleeping in the other room do not wake up, SHO of Itawa police station Sanjay Royal said.

However, the girl's kin woke up and thrashed the accused, but he somehow managed to flee, the police official said.

"He allegedly raped the girl by gagging her, but the family members in the other room were awakened and thrashed him. But, the accused managed to flee, the SHO said.

On the basis of a complaint by the girl's family, a case was registered against the accused under relevant sections of the IPC and under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the police said.

"We have lodged a case of rape against the accused and efforts are underway to nab him," the police officer said.

Medical examination of the girl has been conducted, the officer said, adding her statement would be recorded before the judicial magistrate tomorrow.
