Nearly 17 lakh new members were added to the BJP's Delhi wing during its 45-day-long membership drive, which concluded on Tuesday.

The national membership campaign of the Bharatiya Janata Party was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 6 in Varanasi.

In Delhi, the campaign was launched at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium by senior party leader and national in-charge of the BJP's membership drive Shivraj Singh Chouhan on June 7.

"Around 17 lakh new members were brought into the party fold during the campaign and Delhi unit of the party has topped in the entire country," claimed Delhi BJP general secretary and state in-charge of the campaign Kuljeet Chahal.

He said the final figures were being compiled and the exact numbers would be declared later.

Initially, the Delhi BJP's target was to add 10 lakh new members to the party during the campaign which was to conclude on August 11. However, the campaign was extended till August 20, Chahal said.

"Right from the top leaders to the ordinary booth level workers, everyone worked hard for success of the campaign," Chahal said.

Currently, the Delhi BJP has around 22 lakh registered members, out of which over 14.5 lakh are duly verified, party leaders said.

The surge in membership of the party is a "good omen" as the assembly polls are scheduled early next year, they added.
