A local court today acquitted 18 journalists working for various local newspapers and TV channels who were booked for assaulting the then chairman of Andhra Pradesh Press Academy Devulapalli Amar and others in 2009.

The 2nd Additional Judge Lavanya observed in the order that the prosecution has failed to prove the case against the accused.

The case was filed on July 1, 2009 by former Kadapa district unit president of AP Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) Ramasubba Reddy on the behalf of Amar.

According to the prosecution, 18 journalists beat up Amar, former APUWJ general secretary Narendra Reddy and one Amarnath following a dispute and chased them away during a meeting here on June 28, 2009.

Police had filed the charge sheet in the case in 2010.

During the trial, the witnesses in the case failed to depose before the court while seeking many adjournments.
